An Evening with Greg Morton and Jim Stanley

Tuesday, June 8, 2021 @ 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM

$10

Bluegrasser guitarist Greg Morton has spent most of his life on a stage, starting in his mid-teens he and his identical twin brother could be found playing bluegrass festivals opening for big-name artists including John Hartford, Chet Atkins, Bill Monroe, Mark O’Connor and more. In his 20’s he signed on with USO tours to the Orient and Europe, entertaining troops and learning lightning-fast riffs from country and bluegrass greats along the way. For three years, he performed in Hawaii with The Don Ho Show, playing “‘Tiny Bubbles” every day. Then ‘it’ happened, Greg met a girl and moved to Tucson.

Growing up in the hills of Tennessee, Greg grew up on traditional country and bluegrass and upon arriving in Tucson he found that the ‘high lonesome’ sounds of bluegrass music were already reverberating throughout southern Arizona. Greg’s twin brother, Randal Morton, of Memphis, is also well known musically – but as a banjo player. The Morton Twins occasionally reunite to perform at prestigious bluegrass and folk festivals.

Jim Stanley, the duo’s up-right bassist, and Morton have been playing music together collectively for 15 years, nine of those years have been holding down a weekly bluegrass gig at a popular Tucson eatery in downtown Tucson. Stanley has been a part of several bands and musical endeavors in Tucson, most recently he helped establish a club and sound studio in the former 17th St Farmers Market.

Tucson is home to a very active bluegrass music community and Greg Morton has made his mark earning accolades and awards. Morton is a past winner of the Arizona State Guitar Championship and has earned a TAMMIES Award (Tucson Area Music Awards) for Best Acoustic Guitarist. His Greg Morton Trio has won two TAMMIES, one for Best Country & Western Band and one for Best Bluegrass Band.
