“…catch Taj in one of his transcendental live moments when he gets so down in the groove you never want him to stop.” - Tim Sheridan, All Music Guide to The Blues

Composer, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Taj Mahal is one of the most prominent and influential figures in late 20th century blues and roots music. A well-known musicologist he has been a major force in preserving traditional blues and the roots of African-American music. Though his career began more than four decades ago with American blues, he has broadened his artistic scope over the years to include music representing virtually every corner of the world – west Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, the Hawaiian islands and so much more. What ties it all together is his insatiable interest in musical discovery. Over the years, his passion and curiosity have led him around the world, and the resulting global perspective is sublimely reflected in his music.

Taj’s prolific career includes contributions of dozens of movie soundtracks (Sounder, The Mighty Quinn, Songcatcher), television scores, and Broadway productions. He has produced more than 50 records, including nine Grammy nominations and two Grammy winners, Señor Blues (1997) and Shoutin’ in Key (2000).

“I didn’t want to fall into the trap of complacency. I wanted to keep pushing the musical ideas I had about jazz, music from Africa and the Caribbean. I wanted to explore the connections between different kinds of music.” – Taj Mahal

Happy Birthday Taj Mahal!

The Fremonts, with “Mighty” Joe Milsap on vocals and Bob Corritore on harmonica, are a West Coast blues band that nails the classic sound and silky smooth tempo of Louisiana R & B from the 50′s and 60′s. The band excels in down-home early Louisiana swamp strolls and shuffles channeling the sounds of Excello, Imperial, and Vee-Jay Records artists like Lazy Lester, Slim Harpo, and Fats Domino along with their own carefully crafted originals in the regional sounds that are often absent on today’s blues scene. Their most recent release, Mighty Crazy reached number 16 on the Living Blues charts in 2006 and their new album “Live at the Woodpit” will be released May 19th. The Fremonts have received numerous blues awards including the San Diego Reader’s “Best Blues Band,” and also Album of the Year for “Mighty Crazy,” at the 2006 San Diego Music Awards. The band consists of Joe Milsap on vocals, Al West on drums, and Tony Tomlinson and Patrick Skog share the guitar and bass.

Adding his well known expertise to the evening will be Arizona’s legendary blues enthusiast Bob Corritore, one of the most active and highly regarded blues harmonica players on the scene today. As an amazing harp player, record producer, radio DJ, club owner, and band leader, Corritore has played harmonica with just about everybody in the blues world and is currently celebrating 40 years of doggedly promoting the blues. His passionate playing has been featured on more than 50 releases and he is frequently a winner or nominee of Handy, Grammy, Blues Music Awards and Blues Blast Music Awards. Bob Corritore is one of the most active and highly regarded blues harmonica players on the scene today.
