Jessica’s “sound is cosmic cabaret, a delicious blend of acoustic styles delivered with syncopated verve,” (SF Chronicle) opens the show. The chanteuse/songwriter draws from her French/Chinese/American heritage and her youth in Paris to create a delicious blend of French chanson, gypsy jazz, and international folk.”
Accompanied by her accordion, toy piano, and fiery band, Los Angeles-based chanteuse and songwriter Jessica Fichot draws from her multi-ethnic French / Chinese / American heritage to create an intoxicating multilingual fusion of French chanson, 1940s Shanghai jazz, gypsy swing and international folk.
Following the acclaimed releases of her albums “Le Chemin” (2007) and “Le Secret” (2012), Fichot has performed packed venues in France, China, Spain, Mexico, Canada and across the U.S – backed by her fiery band (clarinet/sax, upright bass and guitar) and armed with her accordion, toy piano and multilingual vocals. With her latest musical adventure, “Dear Shanghai” (2014), a work sung entirely in Mandarin Chinese, Fichot celebrates the swing-era sounds of her mother’s hometown with intoxicating 1940s Shanghai jazz gems as well as inspired original songs – turning listeners on to the musical terrain of a bygone era half a world away.
Fichot is also an active composer, who has written hundreds of children’s songs for various educational programs, as well as music for many independent video games.
In her newest EP “Dear Shanghai” takes the listener to 1940s Shanghai with a work entirely sung in Mandarin Chinese and celebrating her mother’s hometown. The multicultural musician covers jazzy numbers, exotic rumbas, a couple of original songs, as well as a pop classic from Hong Kong – bringing a fresh, modern take on musical gems spotlighting the golden era of the city.
